According to The Focus Information Agency (FIA), Hungary has asked for the money it paid to Holocaust survivors back. While, according to FIA, the Hungarian government asserts that it wants the money back because US administrators “failed to prove how the funds were used”, The Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA) reports that The Claims Conference has accused Hungary of “depriving” Holocaust survivors of the funds by using “disgraceful” and “deceitful tactics.”

According to JTA, the Hungarian government had asked The Claims Conference to return $12.6 to the Hungarian treasury, saying that the conference had used “discriminatory methods” and had not properly reported how the money was used. It also said it would not give any more money to the conference until “the issue was solved.”

According to Hungarian News outlet MTI, Hungarian Ministry Government Commissioner Levente Andras Gal said that The Claims Conference “was commissioned in 2007 to pay compensation to Holocaust survivors of Hungarian descent living abroad.”
However, Levente claimed that he had repeatedly asked the conference to give detailed accounts of its spending and it had not done so. MTI reports that the government had given the conference a 60-day deadline, which, according to the ministry, had expired.
