Tony Greenstein seems to use tactics which i observed at close quarters in the Trotskyite left. although i know nothing about his background it would not surprise me to learn that in former days he was a member of the WRP or SWP.

whatever is the case about that, such people are always enthusiastic denouncers of those with whom they disagree. and ‘credentials’ are everything, which goes hand in hand with the ‘guilt by association’ method of judging people, and the phenomenon of ‘witch-hunts’.

one might attempt to delineate a psychopathology of ideological solipsism. genetic technology may one day empower such individuals, since they would ideally like to be at the head of a movement of people who are clones of themselves.
this is cognitive dissonance gone mad.

i love the diversity of human beings, and i can empathise with people even though i think their actions are wrong or even despicable in objective terms. one of the prices that must be paid for this universal sympathy is that i have to accept that people i like may have views i strongly disagree with, whilst, on the other hand, i must recognise there may be something of value in people whom for one reason or another i do not like (even people like Greenstein and Foxman).

in fact the notion of chosen-ness, with the inevitable moral exceptionalism that brings in its train, is not confined to zionist tribalism. it can be observed in many political, religious and other sects (e.g. programmatic movements in the arts). one readily detectable symptom is that the members of any chosen group is that they love manifestos and lists of people who are proscribed, excommunicated or disavowed. in the worst case scenario the rejected are declared non-persons – there may even be fatwas against them and any who associate with them. the way Haredis spit at people in the street is to me contemptible but i am pleased that at least i am capable of making an imaginative attempt to understand their sordid inner lives, whereas they are quite incapable of understanding me. similarly the Wahabi/Salafi strain of Islam (in no way are these people really Muslim) shout and scream the most when they are denouncing sufism.

in the case you have discussed in your post Greenstein is the Salafi, whereas you and Gilad are the sufis in this analogy.

another symptom of many forms of sectarian bigotry is the urge to proselytiza. this does not apply so strongly to bigotry and chosen-ness based on ethnicity.

we may not know who it was that said this, but we do know it comes from antiquity. how much validity has it lost with the passage of time and the rise of new technologies of exploitation, mendacity, destruction and the persecution of the innocent and defenceless?

I wonder if this Gabriel Ash is the same archangel who called me an anti-Semite on the blog Jews Sans Frontieres, under an article about the protests against president Ahmadinejad at the Durban conference on racism in 2009.

I asked: Isn’t it possible that they are Jewish, too? And isn’t it possible that this, too, is significant? – given that Ahmadinejad’s speech was anti-Israel. The comment was deleted. You cannot discuss with “jewish marxists”. The concept is like the “jewish and democratic state”. It is tes and antites in the same context – contradictornary. It is better to dismantel their doublestandards and racism, and try to eliminate their influence in the palestinian soldatity movement and more.
