"How did the Brotherhood triumph against all odds, with the media, courts and the all-powerful military doing everything to undermine them? The answer is simple. It was the desperation of the poor and the quiet commitment of devout Muslims among all classes of Egyptian society."

Not exactly. So far, with the exception if Hezbollah, no religious revolutionary movement in the ME has "triumphed against all odds."
And Hezbollah triumphed militarily, truly against all odds, but not in taking over politically. The Phallangists and sectarian sunnies, the drzue, etc can still be very useful to keep Lebanon from becoming a unified anti-Israel front.
The answer is indeed "simple" but it is not the one suggested by Wahlberg.
The answer is that USrael have always feared (1) a secular government and (2) a religious government they cannot control, in that order. It appears that #2 is always preferable, given the experience they ahve in inciting sectarian violence.
Surely Mubaraka's age and state of health gave them plenty of time to ponder what would be the best next option. They also know that the Egyptian people continue to be incapable of reciprocating Israel's true love for them and keep proposing dangerous ideas like tearing up the treaty with israel, opening the border with Gaza (currently ajar), etc
"The people" can wait...
