I cannot now conceive how I was a member of that party for over thirty years, deluded into a genuine belief that they had principles.

i think we have all (those of us who think at all) experienced ‘a rude awakening’. whatever merit there may have been in the old-style party politics, it has now almost evaporated. we must adapt. this is not easy – we would all like to believe we live in a well-governed society in which not only do the trains run on time but politicians act with honorable motives, the news media give honest accounts of world and domestic events etc. etc.

perhaps nostalgia paints a rosier picture of the past, but we can see there were gains in education, individual freedom, minority rights…

nostalgia may sell films, but it does not win wars.

in evolutionary terms humanity is self-defined by its ability to adapt to changed circumstances.
